Seasons News Update Exclusive

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

The showing of Seasons at Sheffield will also include Roam!, as they are both films about 35-40 minutes long, and there will be a short making of documentary in between.

We are also reliable informed that (HRH) Steve Peat will be making a personal appearance with some of his team mates and answering a few questions from the audience at the end of the showing, provided ‘things go to plan’.

Monkeyspoon.com jerseys

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

As Nicky said we (Nicky, Shane and myself) have been looking into getting some custom monkeyspoon jerseys sorted. We have been looking for jerseys to get everything printed onto. And as the idea is that we get a good number of jerseys ordered so that everyone can have one, if they so wish. I thought it would be a good idea to put a poll together, so that we could vote what we thought the best jerseys were.

The idea is to get Monkeyspoon, Just sharing the ride across the front (two lines) and then a logo and maybe rider name across the back. However, this still has not been 100% decided so ideas are welcome.

Right these are the Jerseys we have selected;
1.Troy Lee L/S Moto Jersey ‘08, details here. Obviously would have to rethink the front design but Troy Lee stuff always looks good.
2.Fox Attack, details here
3 Fox Attack L/S Black , details here
4 Fox Attack L/S White/Grey , details here

When voting please consider price as well as looks, would you be willing to pay that price. In addition, we still need to factor in the costs of printing, Both Josh and Nicky has been told about a place near Je James but as of yet we don’t know the price of printing. But before we order anything we will obviously get this sorted. If you have another ideas/thoughts please leave a comment below.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Exams are but a few weeks away, which means revision is looming and encroaching on riding time. However mother nature is being kind at the moment and giving us ridable light until late in the evenings. So I have been riding quite regually mainly with Jeff. We sessioned the brinks road DH track on Sunday & Monday (yes we pulled our fingers out of our arses and got out riding).

Shane doing a small drop @ black rabbit

On Tuesday I headed up Pindale with Jeff, Shane & Ben. We had a pretty good time playing on rollers and a tricky rock section some where halfway up the quarry face, only Shane made it through and he did so by endowing on slippy jagged rocks, nice. We sessioned a small drop and scouted a maybe doable gap jump which would look awesome on film. With all the playing we only had time for a couple of runs. On the last run Jeff took some photos. It was about 8.30 and pretty much dark. Jeff kindly got his flash out and blinded us leaving us to blindly hold on for dear life down the rock track.

Nicky riding down black rabbit

Yesterday (Wednesday) me and johnny headed up to the quarry above the millstone. We didn’t ride but did some digging. The old hip is rebuilt some roller drops have been rebuilt and we built a gap drop which is quite big. Should be good for a session some time soon (maybe after exams or one evening).

On other news, there are rumors of some spangly monkeyspoon.com jerseys! (talk to Irwin if you are interested in one, the current idea is to base them around sombrio jerseys).

YouTube improves quality …a bit

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

YouTube seems to loved as being the great video revolution of recent (or total) internet history. The credit is certainly due when it comes to its accessibility, ease of use, community and interface features. However the quality and resolution is really lacking. It may be suitable for webcam blogging and mobile phone clips, but for anything fast moving, i.e. mountain biking videos it just blurs and all the detail is lost. In an age of 1280×1024 pixel 19″ monitors and impending HD TV of up to 1920×1080 YouTube recommends uploading video at 320×240. 16 years ago Microsoft had an operating system called Windows 3.1, its screen resolution was 4 times large than YouTube’s videos, so if you could go back 16 years, YouTube videos would still look small on your screen.

For roughly a year we had a video service run by DivX called Stage6, a paradise of high quality video, where video was in 720×540, virtually DVD quality, and the only file limit was it had to be smaller than 2GB (2000MB) vs YouTube’s 100MB or 10 minutes. Unfortunately due to gross incompetence Stage6 is no more. So with nothing (that I’ve found) coming to close to Stage6 quality wise where does that leave us?

Well YouTube do seem to be starting to move (and so they should be with all that Google cash floating around), they recently announced a two tear quality system. Some videos will now be available in higher quality (HQ), provided they are uploaded in HQ to start with. By default YouTube will only show the HQ version if it detects your connect speed is quite fast. But you can override this by going to your Account Video Quality Settings and choose “I have a fast connection. Always play higher quality video when it’s available.”.

But not all videos show in HQ when they can, so there what some people call a “hack”, buts its more of an unpublicised option, whereby you can add “&fmt=18” on to the end of the URL to view the HQ version. Eg see the links below:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kLi_yT7O_LE
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kLi_yT7O_LE&fmt=18

Youtube Quality Comparison
Youtube Quality Setting
In the above comparison you can see the improved quality on the left and standard quality on the right. Its a lot sharper with more detail and less of the smoothed out MPEG4 effect.

When it’s showing the HQ version you’ll see a little blue screen below the video, click this to switch between quality modes.

So there’s some quality improvement but there’s still along way to go, I wonder how many years it will take for YouTube to get to where Stage6 was.
