This video is the pump track riding from Bamford Pump Track and Joe’s Pump Track from 2010. So if you’re in need of motivation or inspiration for building or maintaining a pump track, ready for those warm light evenings heading our way, hopefully this will help; 6 minutes of berm to berm Pumptraction!
(Also, watch out of me giving pro-man Bowman a run for his money. )

Here’s the video from last month at the Pump Track, with Irwin, Shane, Jeff, Jack, Ed, Alex & Jonerz. It was billed as the last opportunity to ride the Pump Track in the dry and within a week or two this was proved correct. With the new berm, bowl jump line thing ready for some testing. Which adds a new feature to the track, anyway enjoy the video.

Back at the start of August James, Matt (Ashmore) and me (Jeff) went over to Edale with the intention of riding and filming Jacob’s Ladder. After an impressively (for us) continuous ride up there, from parking area at the bottom, we got to the Ladder where we discovered Irwin’s brakes weren’t doing much following his visit to Morzine. So with filming that track out the window we carried on to the top, putting the bags down on the flat middle section, we added to the length by going up the footpath on the right, giving us a 100m run in to the left hander into the initial gully. It was a good run with some water slashing in various places where it was following the track. I caught Matt up as he hadn’t been riding for a while and overtook him on the flat section. We picked up the bags and then did the section below the gate, it was tiring and my brake levers were too far out.

After that we headed back down to the car before going to the most excellent pub in Edale (possibly even the Valley), The Nag’s Head, and there was a comedy moment where I rode off ahead with Matt’s car keys in my pocket before realising and going back. We happened to bump into Shane and had a rather nice plate of chips and onion rings with a side dish of banter, followed by a generous amount of chocolate cake courtesy of Shane’s missus, cheers .

Following a lesson in trials riding from the ProMaster we drove up to Mam Tor, leaving Shane to his work. We rode down to Hollins Cross, with Irwin’s brakes improving somewhat we filmed on the bridleway that goes down to Greenlands, before a final sweaty push back up to the car. The weather was good and I got funny shaped sunburn where my arm pads weren’t covering.

On Friday Irwin and I rode the Pump Track in Bamford, it wasn’t too wet considering the weather of recent, an extra line has been added coming off the far berm and we did a bit maintenance on the far inner berm. We then had a competition that involved the middle line into the mini PT berm and then rolling as far up the bank as possible, I won, possibly due to a controversial wheelbase size advantage. Following that we took pictures on the mini PT berm.

Conditions were dry, fast and dusty. Highlights included Irwin coming off and Jack pulling random stunts he couldn’t land.

After most people had gone it was just Shane, Ben, Ed and myself (Jeff), I took a few remote flash pics in the tight berm, which I was later pleased to successfully get through and over the next roller. Shane did the bank drop a couple of times. After Ed left we spent most of the time sat on our bikes on the bank just chilling and discussing riding, bike films and parts. When Irwin returned we got the lights out did some loops in the dark.

With longer, warmer evenings coming we should hopefully be able to enjoy more evenings like this one.

The berm is a little different to anything I’ve seen or ridden before, the down slope from the roller is quite long before the berm starts to curve, its fairly tight with a high wall and steep angle on the wall. The exit is the interesting part, a metre high large roller. It took some time to perfect the roller position, angles, and size, and even more time to perfect riding it. The combination of speed tightness and the exit roller means the berm has real kick to it, sucking you in and spitting you out where you don’t expect to be. If you don’t get you line right you end up shooting out the berm and going of the right side of the roller, or if you don’t have the speed to make it to the summit you have to jump off you’re bike and back to ground level. O and braking cos you’re scared would be a mistake too.

After we had finished digging for the day Jonny headed home and Joe and I pushed up the hill for some razzin ‘n shootin. I set up my flash on the extension cable and Joe sent the loose bracken flying.

As it got darker I noticed the sky was looking good with dark clouds and some slightly pink sky in between, after a bit of fiddling with the flash brightness and shutter speed I had the camera set to get the nice sky in the shot too.

I decided to go a bit controversial and keep the flash burst in shot, I think it adds something.
I threw the wide angle lens into the fray later on and then with the setup good we swapped over and got some ones of me looking quite good for a change (the pictures and riding, not me ).

When we came back down the hill we stopped at the rocky track for some more shooting, it was pretty much dark by time I’d set up, so Joe had to stop as soon as the flash fired and blinded him.

Thanks to Joe’s mum for the egg and bacon cobs, not just cos digging is hungry work, but more for the opportunity to see Joe make the Text Book mistake when eating an egg cob… again.

On Friday night we went to ride the pump track, there was me (Jeff) on my hardtail, Irwin on his dad’s rigid, Pete on Irwin’s full-sus, and Tim (Pete’s mates not his brother) on his full sus, so attention soon turned to the jump. We had enough lights to light the jump and landing, so Tim was first, he later found out not only had anyone present done it in its’ current state, but also no one had done it in the dark, oh and that it’s structure was mainly metal based.

I had some new flash accessories meaning I could place the flash so its’ light was coming from a different angle, giving a lot more deep to the image than when it’s mounted on the camera. I’m quite pleased with the results, the biggest problem I had was focusing the camera in the dark.

With it being freezing (literally) and the prospect of something feet warming from Irwin’s drinks cupboard we only stayed there for about half an hour.
